A Dangerous Time - Chapter 1

((Okays, this is just coming out of nowhere...and Kaddy felt like writing all of a sudden so this is the result of that ^.^ This story will take place with mainly my Pack characters, which means most of my own characters will be in it, as well as my friend Averie's character, Neko.

Around the little village, the members of the pack were scattered about doing various things. Himuro was training in the woods, just outside the village entrance. Izuko (although not a true member of the pack) and Manako, Himuro's twin brother, were causing trouble with all the ladies again today. Tsumi and Neko were getting along in the garden, giggling over something that had caught their attention. The kids, Kai and Amai, were chasing each other around, just as kids their age should. Kentarou stayed off to the side and out of everyone's way. Most of the people in the pack didn't like ghosts. Kadis smiled when she saw all this. Things were almost as they should be. Almost.

Not everything had been peaceful around her pack's tiny village, recently. There had been attacks taking place nearby and a lot of the pack members were scared, mainly for the safety of the pups. A few days before, a few of the others had went out to check out just what was going on. She was beginning to worry about them now too. Especially about their leader and her love, Shiro. She'd heard nothing from him since he'd been gone, so it was natural she'd worry. He wasn't the only one she was worried about. Her brother, Kaze, had also gone out with them. Why he'd gone, she didn't know. Kaze didn't seem like the type of person who would willingly put himself in danger. But, his decisions were usually spur of the moment and kind of hard to decipher, but she knew he'd be alright. She turned and looked back at her friend Neko and her sister-in-law, Tsumi. Both of them must be worried sick too, she thought. The two of them both had someone they love go out on the search. For both girls, it was Akaru, Shiro and Tsumi's youngest brother and Neko's mate. One of the few things they had in common was their love for him.

Someone placed a hand on her shoulder and she turned to find Himuro there, a bit sweaty from his training. "You're listening for them again, aren't you?" he asked her. He knew that she cared for Shiro, and even though he didn't like her that much, he treated her almost as a sister. "They'll be back soon, don't worry, alright?"

Kadis nodded and smiled at him a little. "I know, Himuro," she replied, pushing her hair back from her face. "It's just so dangerous this time around with all the attacks recently. It isn't like a normal hunting trip. I don't want any of them getting hurt, you know?"

He pat her head and gave her a crooked smile. "Well, if something were to happen, we've got two excellent healers here in our tiny little village, don't we, miss Pack Leader?"

"I suppose you're right." She paused for a moment. "You know, I think that's one of the few compliments I've received from you." The wolf girl smiled a bit more now. He knew how to cheer her up at times like these.

"Heh...don't get used to it." He walked past her towards the little house he shared with Manako and Tsumi. "I'm going to get cleaned up a bit. Don't worry, they'll be fine, Kaddy." The beta wolf waved and walked inside the house, shutting the door behind him.

Kadis sat down under the old, large tree that marked the center of the tiny village. "Maybe he's right...I shouldn't worry too much about all this."

"You're just now realizing this?" said a familiar voice from above. Nate was laid on the branch right over her head. "How many times have I told you that since they left, Kaddy? They're all capable of taking care of themselves. They're grown men."

She looked up at him and stuck her tongue out, her childishness showing. She had been friends with Nathaniel since she was a little girl and they got along well, although it may not seem that way all the time. She'd met him in her first grade class. When everyone was teasing her because of her ears and tail, he was the only one that defended her. "You can't tell me you aren't just a little worried about my brother, Nate," she replied to him. "Neko and I both know how much you like him...although you won't say it aloud."

That caused him to blush and he almost lost his balance, but caught himself at the last second. "S-shut up! I do not like him! Who'd like someone like that guy?"

Kadis giggled. "Um...you obviously. You're blushing and it's written all over your face. Just admit you like Kaze already." She stood up and tugged on his jeans. "Say it!"

"No! Be quiet already, sheesh." Nate swung his other leg over the side of the branch and jumped down. "Alright, so maybe I do a little... Let's just change the subje--"

Kadis held up a hand to silence him, her wolf ears twitching a little. She'd heard something somewhat close by, not too far outside the village. She sniffed the air and her eyes widened slightly. "Those two scents together...no...Akaru!" She made her way quickly towards Tsumi and Neko, who had both stopped what they where doing. The expressions on their faces had gone from cheerful to uneasy in a matter of seconds. "Tsumi, come with me," she commanded. She knew it was time to take control of the pack. She didn't want everyone to be upset. "Neko, I know you'll probably want to be nearby, but that may not be best right now." She glanced around for some of the others and spotted Manako and Izuko right away. "Mana, 'Ko, take Neko and keep her away for a while. At least until I tell you it's safe."

"B-but, if Akaru's hurt..." the cat-girl tried to protest, but she stopped and nodded. "Alright..." she said, standing up. She let the two older wolves take her away. She knew she wouldn't have been able to do much, anyway.

Kadis bit her lip a little. She knew that was the best decision, despite how much it hurt Neko. The wolf girl glanced around. The pups were all that were left, really. She noticed Himuro rush out of his own home and her other cousin, Izumo come from his. She figured Izumo was the best bet to watch the kids. "Izumo, take the pups inside and keep them away from the windows," she told him. He nodded and obeyed, herding the two young pups into the house.

Himuro was beside her and Tsumi in a matter of seconds. He must have rushed because he hadn't bothered to put a shirt on, which was slightly distracting at that moment. With all the training he did every day, he was really well-built for his age. "That scent...the young Ookami's been hurt?" he asked grimly.

"So it seems..." Kadis murmured. She hoped he wasn't hurt too badly. She was worried for him quite a bit too. He was her pet after all. And her brother-in-law too. But that didn't matter right now "Come on." The three of the started towards the entrance just as the others did. Shiro and Kaze carried Akaru between them. The sight wasn't a pretty one. All of them were covered in blood. Tsumi's hand went to her mouth and she gasped in shock when they set him down. A long, somewhat deep gash had been cut in to his left arm starting at the crook of his elbow and ending at his wrist. It wouldn't stop bleeding. Many more smaller cuts covered his body. Another long wound had been carved into his right leg and a wound in the shape of an "x" was on his cheek. His breathing was ragged and uneven. "He's lost a ton of blood already and is still losing more..." Kadis said, trying to keep her voice even. She really hadn't expected it to be this bad. "Tsumi, you take his arm. I'll take care of the leg. Those are the most important to take care of right now." She looked behind her. Shiro almost looked ready to cry and Kaze did too. "You two, go get some rest...we'll talk later."

"Kad, I'm sorry, I...I tried to protect him..." Shiro began, but he stopped when Kaze placed a hand on his shoulder. The two of them walked towards the house.

Kadis watched them go and placed her hands over the gash in Akaru's leg and concentrated hard. Her hands glowed a dark blue color as she passed them back and forth over the injury. She noticed Tsumi doing the exact same thing with his arm, her hands glowing a light purple instead of dark blue. This is going to take time and concentration, she thought as she passed her hands over the wound again. The gash was not only long, but deep too. It's taking a lot of power...Tsumi and I will probably be exhausted by the time it's over. She sighed and tried to concentrate again.

Kadis sat laid on her bed, completely worn out. It had taken a little over three hours for Akaru's injuries to almost completely heal. Many of the smaller scratches and scrapes would turn out okay, but the ones on his arm and leg would leave scars, as would the one on his cheek. "I wish I could have done more..." she said quietly to herself. She closed her eyes and rolled over. A knock came at her door. "Come in," she said. Rolling over just as the door opened, she saw her brother enter, followed by Shiro and Himuro. "What is it? Has something happened to him?" She jumped up ready to go see if Akaru was alright.

Himuro shook his head and smiled a little, holding up his hand to stop her. "Calm down, Kaddy...he's fine, Tsumi's with him," he assured her.

Shiro sat down on the bed and pulled Kadis into his lap, wrapping his arms around her waist. He hid his face in between her shoulder and her neck, causing her to blush just a little. She could feel the tears streaming down his face and onto her shoulder. "Kad, I...I wasn't there when it happened..." he said, his voice muffled a bit. "He'd gone off to search on his own and I thought he'd be alright..." His voice was wavering. He was very upset over this and she knew it. Anyone would be upset if their younger brother had just been attacked. "I should have gone with him...or at least sent your brother with him...it's my fault he's hurt..."

"Shiro, no it isn't...you didn't know he'd be attacked. None of you did." She took his hand and held it in her own. "He'll be fine...he's not in any serious danger. Tsumi and I did everything we could. It isn't your fault at all."

She felt him wipe away his tears before looking up at her. The leader of a pack crying was an embarrassing thing for him to deal with. He didn't want anyone in the pack to see him cry and think he was weak and unfit to be the leader. "Thank you...you don't know how thankful I am right now..."

"I think I understand...trust me, dear." She went to kiss his cheek, but he turned at the last moment, just enough for their lips to meet. Her face turned bright red and her eyes widened slightly. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw Kaze, looking a bit shocked, but also like he was ready to kill.

"S-Shiro...that's my sister...and right in front of me too!" Kaze practically shouted. He didn't really mean any of it; he knew that Shiro was the best choice for his sister.

Shiro turned and smiled at Kaze. "Sorry...I just needed a little something to cheer me up is all." The pack leader picked Kadis up with one arm and stood himself, setting her back down on the bed. "You need to get some rest, Kad. We'll leave and let you get some sleep. You've worked hard and you deserve it..." He kissed her forehead once more and shuffled out behind the others. "Sleep well."

Kadis watched as they left. Things were going to be different now. A lot different. She laid back on her bed and crawled under the covers. She was really exhausted because she had fallen asleep in a matter of seconds.
